Unit 1 Projects
Stamp Project
I made this stamp project by using my hand to squish the clay and then smashing it on the table to flatten the stamp part. Later I carve out a B for the initial of my last name with a carving tool and then I put it on the shelf to get fired. I think the carving went well but I could have made the handle a lot smoother by using a tool to smooth it out.
Small Painted Pendant
I took a wedged piece of clay and then put it into a slab roller. After I collect my slab and cut a small rectangle into it. I make a hole using a paint brush then use my finger to smooth out the sides. I use some underglaze to make a tree design. I think the slab and shape turned out well but the hole with the paint brush was not as good as it could have been. If I were to do this over I would use a different tool to make the hole and get more colorful paint.
Face Project
I started off by making a pinch pot. After I made the pinch pot I added eyeballs that I hand rolled, ears I made by squishing clay in my palm, and lips I made by rolling clay into a sphere then laying it flat. I scored and slipped all of those on then let it dry. I put it on the shelf to be fired. After being fired I pull it out and accidentally broke it. What went well was the overall making of it because I thought it was super creative and fun but what went wrong is obviously that I accidentally broke it. If I were to redo this project I would be more careful with my piece.
Unit 2 Projects
Pinch Pot Cut in Half
I started by taking a wedged piece of clay and cutting a medium sized piece out of it. I use my thumbs to create a pinch pot out of this ball of clay. then I let it outside to dry a bit. After it dried for about 10 minutes I walked outside with a wire tool. I set the pinch pot down on the patio then cut it in half. What went well was how effectively I did this project and what I would change in the future is smoothing out the pinch pot more.
Useful Pinch Pot With a Lid
First I wedged a block of clay. With this wedged clay I take a medium sized slice off of it then use my thumbs to make a pinch pot. I let my pinch pot dry a bit and then I Start creating a lid. I Start by pin rolling a piece of clay and then using a tool to add a design to it. Then I cut out the lid to match the measurements of the bowl. I make a handle for the lid then let them dry. I get them fired finally. What I think I did well was the pinch pot and the handle. What I think I could improve on is the lid fitting better.
Double Pinch Pot
I first started with wedging my clay. Then I cut 2 pieces off of the wedged clay. I use my thumbs to make a pinch pot out of both pieces. I score and slip the top of each pot. I connect the 2 pinch pots. Then I let the pinch pots dry a little. Then I make a hole in the pinch pots so its not a bomb. Things I did good was cleanly connecting the 2 pots. Things I would improve in the future is smoothing it out while it is drying so it comes out smoother.
Small Sculpture Made of a Double Pinch Pot
I start by wedging the clay. I cut off two balls of clay. I use my thumbs to turn these balls of clay into pinch pots. I let them dry a little. I score and slip them into a double pinch pot. I cut out pieces into the double pinch pot. I made eyes and feet and ears and then score and slip them on. I let it dry and then get it fired. After it is fired I paint it and get it fired again. I think I did a good job making the entire sculpture. But Things I think I could have done better is painting it cleaner.
Releif Tile
First I start by wedging clay. I take this wedged clay and turn it into a slab that is 1/3 of an inch thick. I cut a rectangle out of this slab and also cut out a circle. I put this circle on the rectangle. I use the remainder of the slab to make lips and sunglasses. I score and slip the sunglasses and lips onto the circle then score and slip the circle onto the rectangle then I get it fired. Things I think I did good was the lips and I think I could have improved on the sunglasses.
Historically inspired piece
Research
First I started with wedging a piece of clay. I Put the clay through the slab table and make a 1/4 inch slab. I cut this slab into a triangle and then use the slab to make little eyes with my fingers. I cute a pyramid design into the slab and then cut a divider from the tip of the triangle from the body. I score and slip the eyeball on and then get it fired. I think I did a really good job with the eyeball and pyramid design but if I could redo it I would make the edges of the triangle smoother and add a design to the side.
According to Wikipedia the "Eye Of Providence" was a symbol of American History to represent strength and the original 13 colonies, and it is a pyramid with a Floating eye at the tip top of it.
Unit 3 Projects
Slab Slump Mold
First I started by slabbing out some clay. Then I take the clay and apply it to a bowl with corn starch on it. I let the clay dry on the bowl and then take it off. I carefully Cut the sides to make it into a plate. I am overall happy with this piece, but things I would do different were to make it into a bowl instead of a plate. And things I think I did good were using corn starch to get a clean design on the piece.
Sgrafifto
I start by slabbing out a piece of wedged clay. I then draw a guide line to cut into a pumpkin. I cut on this guide line and end up with a pumpkin. I clean up the edges and then let it dry. After it dries I underglaze it and then blow dry it until the paint is dry. I carve it into a pumpkin shape and then put it on the shelf. Later I glaze it with clear glaze then get it fired again. Things I would do better would be do openly cut the stem better. Things I think I did good was painting the pumpkin.
Coil
I start by wedging clay and then slabbing it out with the machine. I cut a square and then I cut many long lines of clay. I clean up the square and then start turning the long strands into twists. I make every single different type of coil and then I make a P and a B to signify my name on the piece. I let it dry and then I fire it and then glaze it. Things I did good were making the coils. If I could go back I would clean up the piece more and glaze it a different color.
Slab Structure's Darts
I started by wedging clay and then slabbing it out. After letting it dry a little I cut the clay into a rectangle shape and then wrap it around to make a cup shape. I cut equal triangles on all 4 sides and then I make another smaller square to put on the bottom. I connect the sides and then put the square on top. I put feet on the Square and then let it dry. Things I did good was the feet on the block. If I could go back I would've waited for the clay to get dryer so the side didn't cave in.
Relief Carving
First I start by wedging a block of clay. I slab out this clay and then cute a wide rectangle. I cut out my plant shape and my pot shape and then a leaf shape. I connect these shapes and then score and slip them on. After I connect the pieces of clay together and then start to paint them. After painting it I let it dry, I carve it and then put it on the shelf to get fired. Things I did good was the design of the plant. If I could go back in time and change something I would smooth out the corner of the square slab.
